We know that you’re thinking of cooler days, but that doesn’t mean warm ones won’t pop back up sooner than expected! Get to know your air conditioner now so you can avoid accidentally killing it later.
You are neglecting your air conditioner if you:
Never service it. A biannual inspection by a highly rated technician is key to prolonging the life of your AC unit. Yearly service plans are typically available and cost less than the emergency repair service that comes with lack of maintenance.
Forget to change the filter. A clean filter is a happy filter. Skipping this step will force your unit to work harder than it wants to. You’ll want to change it quarterly.
Let it run constantly. Frequently changing the desired temperature will result in an overworked unit. Let it run to achieve an average and consistent temperature in your home. If you a feel a little warmer than usual, try closing the blinds and making smaller adjustments.
Have not done an energy audit. An energy audit will tell you if your home is properly insulated and if your ac unit is the right size for your home. It is obviously great to do this before selecting a unit all together, however, it is never too late to make sure.
Let ice build up. This is a tell-tale sign that a unit is too small. Letting ice continue to build up will damage the unit. Instead, turn it off and allow it to thaw and then talk with your technician about a unit that can properly cool the space in your home.
