3 AC Mistakes to Avoid

When you live in a warm climate, it’s easy to spend lots of money on your air conditioner. But did you know that making a few adjustments to the way you use your AC can make a big difference for your utility bills? Here are five common mistakes you want to avoid at all costs:

Buying a bigger AC than you need. Sometimes less is more, especially when it comes to your heating and cooling system! A common misconception for homeowners is that buying a bigger air conditioner will cool off your home faster. This isn’t always the case. In fact, an oversized air conditioner can cause potential inefficiency by cycling on and off too fast. However, you won’t want to buy an AC that’s too small either. A happy medium will do!

Putting the air conditioner in a hot spot. Placing your AC in a spot on the southwest side of your home sounds like a good idea in theory, as the home heats up more quickly over there. However, installing it on the southwest side only will make your unit work even harder, which can cause it to breakdown more easily. Instead, place your air conditioner on the north side of your house where you are less likely to receive direct sunlight.

Leaving your AC on. While we know it feels great to come home to a cool house after a day at work, leaving your air conditioner on all day is a common mistake for many homeowners. Believe it or not, you can save more money by using a programmable thermostat or a timer to cool off the house before you get home from work. Ask your HVAC technician more about these alternatives!

Heating up the thermostat. Keeping your TVs, radios, and table lamps close to your thermostat is a big no-no! In doing so, you could risk driving up the temperature of your thermostat. This will make it work harder than it needs to, which can be a big hazard for you and your family.

Not performing maintenance. Hiring a technician for maintenance or taking on the task yourself seems like a hassle, but if you ignore this step, you could be putting your home’s efficiency and comfort at risk. Not to mention, you could be putting off more costly emergencies down the road. So, don’t forget to check on it once in a while or ask for help!
