AC & Heater Repair in San Antonio

Easy Fire Prevention Tips

Did you know that half of home heating equipment fires occur in winter? Although your family depends on heat during the cooler months of the year, doesn’t mean there aren’t some dangers to be aware of.

At Schmidt Mechanical, comfort and safety is our number one priority. So to help you prevent a hire hazard, we’ve put together the following tips:

Keep heating equipment away. Rule of thumb: keep all flammable materials, like your furniture and window treatments, at least three feet away from heating equipment. This includes the fireplace, portable space heater, and wood stove.

Create a kid-friendly zone. Because your children play indoors more often during the winter months, be sure to keep your home heating kid-safe. For example, create a “kid-free zone” around wood burning stoves and fireplaces for them to play.

Have your chimney inspected. You should annually have your chimney inspected, especially if you use if often. That way, you can take care of any obstructions or bits of debris that might be a fire hazard. In addition, it’s a good idea to have your chimney cleaned by a professional.

Test smoke alarms. Smoke alarms are an essential way to detect signs of smoke or fire. But if they’re not working properly, your home could be in danger. That being said, be sure that every smoke alarm in the house is working properly, change batteries as needed, and replace if broken.

Be careful with space heaters. Space heaters are simple and convenient to use, but they sure can be dangerous. Avoid adding fuel to a space heater while it’s in use, keep a few feet away from furniture and bedding, and turn off when you leave the room.
