3 Mistakes That Will Break your AC

Having guests over for a cookout this holiday weekend? Chances are they’ll be looking for a place to keep cool – which is where your home’s air conditioning comes in to play. Don’t risk having a malfunctioning unit, avoid these three mistakes that are killing your cooling system:

1. Forgetting about the air filter. It’s not always easy to remember a long list of home maintenance tasks that need to get done this summer. Maybe you put something off or simply don’t realize how important it is. Either way, we encourage you to change the air filter in your AC system. Why? Because a dirty filter can prevent clean air from passing through, causing your air conditioner to work harder until it breaks down.

2. Ignoring signs of low refrigerant. Is your AC low on refrigerant? If so, this can pose a potential threat to your cooling system, especially on a hot day. Not only will your energy bills run up, but you will also be putting more stress on your air conditioner, which can lead to a malfunction. If you notice that ice is building up inside the unit or your AC is blowing lukewarm air during the day, call your local HVAC professional for assistance.

3. Letting your outside condenser unit overheat. Just as you would overheat from wearing a wool sweater on a scorching day, so would your condenser unit! The job of your condenser is to disperse any heat that runs through the unit’s condenser coil; however, if your condenser is covered with dirt, the heat is unable to escape the refrigerant. This can ultimately prevent cold air from blowing into your home and potentially cause it to break.

Making any of these three common mistakes can not only ruin your AC unit, but they can also put a damper on your Fourth of July gatherings!
