Common Window Air Conditioner Problems

With all appliances, problems and breakdowns can occur. And for as much as we rely on our AC units, many of us are unaware of the issues that can arise. So, as your local San Antonio HVAC professional, we’ve put together the following list to help you learn about the most common air conditioner problems and what you need to know about them:

Strange Sounds. The sounds that come from your air conditioner can oftentimes be noisy. However, if you notice a loud ‘wailing’, you might want to check your AC’s fan belt, as this is usually the culprit. If your fan belt has been pushed out of place, simply position it back and the noise should stop. However, if the fan belt has been damaged, it might be time for a replacement.

Foul Odors. Pungent smells are another common problem associated with window AC units. These odors are usually caused by a buildup of moisture in your unit due to the constant transition between hot and cool. Switching from hot to cool temperatures fairly often causes moisture, which can be avoided by frequently cleaning the filter in your AC.

Blockage. If the grills on your air conditioner are blocked, you will need to clean its motor, fins, and fan. The best method of preventing further blockage is to thoroughly wipe down these parts with a clean, dry washcloth, as these parts of your device should not get wet. Also, stay on the safe side by unplugging the unit first to avoid electrical hazards.

Thermostat Complications. If your AC’s thermostat sensor gets knocked out of place, the temperature of your unit may start to fluctuate fairly quickly. If you run into this problem, you should carefully reset your thermostat sensor to its original position and make sure it doesn’t come into contact with the coil, which can cause further issues, such as clogs.
