5 Foods that Keep You Cool

Did you know this Sunday is National Chocolate Ice Cream Day? The weather is only getting warmer, so you’re probably tempted to stop at your local ice cream shop. Go enjoy your favorite chocolate scoop – but keep in mind, ice cream isn’t the ONLY way to cool down! In fact, staying cool is all about hydration – eating foods with high water content and other nutrients. So check out these five foods to stock up on this season:

Blueberries. Packed with water, antioxidants, and vitamins, this fruit can help keep your body hydrated. Start your day by relaxing near your AC with a smoothie in hand. They also work well in fresh desserts on a sizzling summer night or in tossed salads at backyard BBQs. Of course, they make a perfect snack too!

Cucumber. It’s true! Cucumbers are almost all water – 96 percent to be exact. Among the many benefits, they are a great source of vitamin C and K and are low in calories. So keep this healthy food in the fridge all season long to add to your sandwiches and salads.

Cilantro. An herb with a incredibly refreshing flavor will undoubtedly keep your body temperature down. Similar to cucumber, cilantro is rich in vitamin A, so add some to a lime juice for that cooling effect you need. In the mood for hotter foods? Throw some cilantro in your soup to reduce body heat.

Mint. The cooling effects of mint will amaze you. It’s been suggested that mint promotes good digestive health, so sip a cup of mint tea in the morning to kickstart your system or put some in your lemonade.

Watermelon. It wouldn’t be summertime without a slice of watermelon! This fruit is mostly water and sugar but contains magnesium and potassium – both essential for balancing fluids in the body. Give your air conditioning a rest by sitting outside in the shade with a slice of watermelon – an ideal afternoon snack to quench your thirst!
