AC & Heater Repair in San Antonio

How to Keep Your House Cool and Save Money During a Heat Wave

Is the heat and humidity turning your house into a slow cooker? While switching on the AC is a sure way to cool down a room, there are other tips that can help you when the temperatures spike. As your trusted San Antonio HVAC specialist, we’ve compiled a list of ways you can keep your house cool during a heat wave:

Close the blinds. Before you turn on your air conditioning, close the blinds and other window treatments. This can do wonders for reducing the amount of heat and sunlight that come through your windows! Shutting the blinds can save you from needing to blast the AC all day, which can save you money over time.

Install low-heat lights. Standard incandescent light bulbs can really heat up your home. Instead, try low-heat options like LEDs or CFLs, which can prevent your house from heating up and save you money. If you’re not ready to switch out your standard lights for cool, energy-efficient ones, you should at least be conscious about turning off the lights when you leave the room.

Think before you cook. There’s almost nothing worse than cooking a meal during a heat wave. If you have to cook indoors, think before using the oven or the stove. Cover pots to decrease humidity, take advantage of your vent fan, and turn off the oven for a few minutes before food is cooked to reduce oven heat. These indoor cooking tips will also prevent you from cranking up the AC! When possible, turn on the grill in your backyard and have a BBQ – it is summer after all!

Turn off electronics. It may surprise you how much heat you can generate from keeping your electronics plugged in all the time. So save yourself the heat and high electric bill by unplugging your computer and TV when not in use. Another alternative is to go out and buy yourself a surge protector, which has a convenient on/off switch for all your gadgets.
