Prep Your Home for a Thanksgiving Vacation

Are you planning a holiday getaway for Thanksgiving? Before you pack your bags and head out the door, don’t leave without making sure your home is safe and sound. Put your mind at ease with these five tips to prep your home for your upcoming vacation:

Set an alarm – Step 1? Get your alarm system ready to go. It’s important to let your alarm company know when will be away and provide them with emergency contact information. Then, properly set up the alarm to make sure unwanted guests stay away. Lastly, give it a test run before you go.

Shut off the water – Coming home to a flood would be any homeowner’s nightmare. Two common appliances that tend to cause a leaks? The washing machine and dishwasher. That being said, shut off the water supply to both so that you don’t come home to any disaster.

Light up your home – When the driveway is empty and the lights are out, it’s obvious that someone might be out of town. Don’t be a target for danger. Instead, set timers in your home so that lamps go on and off at a set time (as if they would when you’re at home).

Turn down the thermostat – Leaving your thermostat turned up can not only waste energy, but your money as well. Before leaving your home, turn the thermostat down about ten degrees so that your heating system doesn’t need to work as hard to provide unnecessary heat while you’re away.

Turn to a trusted friend – Ask trusted friend or neighbor to keep an eye out for the days you’ll be away. Are you expecting a delivery? Kindly ask them to take it inside. Do you have pets that you’re keeping at home? Ask them to check in occasionally. Provide them with a key and ask for their confidentiality when caring for your home. As a bonus, offer to return the favor when it’s their turn for a vacation.
