Childproofing Your HVAC System

It doesn’t matter if you are a parenting rookie or seasoned veteran, keeping your child safe is the most important job you have. We all know how curious babies can be, and this makes keeping them out of danger that much harder. Lucky for you, parenting has been around forever and people have developed some cool techniques for protecting their children.

Check out these tips for keeping your child safe from your HVAC system and vice versa.

Take Care of Your Registers
Shiny items like your HVAC vent might be attractive to a toddler. That is why it is important to make sure the vent cover is screwed down to the floor. This will effectively keep toys and food out of your vent, while also protecting your child’s fingers from any misfortune. If you don’t want to make holes in your floor, purchasing screen filters to block your vents might be the next best thing. But be sure to check in on them to look for holes that your pet or toddler could have been responsible for.

Go Plastic
If you’re worried about metal vents cutting your child’s fingers, just go plastic! You can find them at almost any home improvement store, and they can be applied to both floor and wall registers.

Check Your Outdoor Unit
When your child takes on the great outdoors, you want to eliminate as many hazards as possible. One potential hazard you can easily remove is the threat of your HVAC unit. One simple solution would be to fence in the area to a height that junior can’t conquer. But be sure to leave your HVAC technician ample room to operate when he/she comes to do a maintenance check- up.

Once you have childproofed your system, you should turn your focus to keeping it running properly. But with a child around, you might not have the time to worry about all of that. Don’t worry, at Schmidt Mechanical we can handle all of your HVAC needs in a professional and timely manner.
