3 Ways to Save on Heating Costs

Whether you’re looking to give back to the environment or trying to reduce your monthly spendings, there are plenty of hacks to help cut you slack on heating costs this winter. Here are three major tips to try:

Use the ceiling fan.

If you have a ceiling fan at home, reverse it. Rotating it counterclockwise will force the hot air up in the summer and turning it clockwise will trap heat inside to keep your home more toasty during the winter months. Keep it on a low setting, but don’t forget to shut it off while you’re at work (for safety purposes, of course).

Insulate in the right spots.

Insulating cool spots, like your attic, is one of the most cost-effective ways to stay warm this winter. This of it as building a dam around your house and preventing the cool air from sinking. However, before you start insulating, make sure all your ductwork is sealed, as leaks can cause your heating costs to skyrocket.

Reduce hot water.

According to the Department of Energy, about 14 to 25 percent of our monthly energy bill comes from using our water heaters often. Water heaters are typically set to 140 degrees Fahrenheit, but truth be told, you can still be comfortable even if you set it back to 120 degrees. In fact, not only will you be comfortable, but you will also save 3 to 5 percent on water heating costs! you can also benefit from installing a low flow showerhead, as this can reduce the amount of hot water being used.
